AICE Media Studies intro blog

 This project was very fun and improved my editing and filming skills greatly. It helped me express creativity through media and film. At times it was very stressful, but it helped me learn to manage time greatly. This was a setback during my project, however I was able to take time out of days to work on this. There was also things happening in my personal life that caused me to miss some deadlines but I still tried to get the work done because it was my biggest stresser. I came across many technical difficuties such as my blogger not saving things and at one point my computer broke and I had to get a new one. It was hard to balance mental health, other AICE exams, work, sports, and family while doing the project but I am happy that I still tried. This project taught me how much work you have to put in to put together  a successful film. It helped me apply the things I have learned this year to actually filming a project.  A lot of changes had to be made for this project along the way. Nothing ever goes perfectly as planned. One thing people must consider when filming is not to expect perfection. My intention with everything I do is always to strive for progress, not perfection. I had to adjust and make changes because of poor time planning and other unfortunate events having occurred along the way. Sometimes I have bigger ideas than I can achieve because I expect more than I can do and tend to hold myself to a higher standard than I can achieve. The big plans I make sometimes cannot be achieved to their full extent. When I first started this project, I wanted things very different, in fact, an entirely different genre. The original genre I had planned to do was action with police and other things like that, and yes I could have done that but with all of my other classes and AICE tests coming up, that would have been something bigger to manage than I needed.  The film process was very interesting and long. It feels like a weight has been taken off my shoulders.   I had many obstacles to overcome, but always found a solution even if it took a lot of thinking and some help from my friends Jenna and Jade. The whole process of making this final task really caused me to appreciate moviemaking more. It is fun but extremely time consuming and often very stressful, especially as a beginner. I did learn a lot. I learned that no matter how hard it is, you have to persevere and keep trying to find new ways out of tough situations and things like this take hard work and dedication, yet it is worth it in the end. In this project, I perfected my filming and editing skills and also exercised my creativity. I practiced shooting from different angles and trying new things like panning the camera. I could talk forever about music. Music always makes me feel certain ways depending on what music I am listening to. Getting into good music changed my life for the better. If I listen to sad music, I will be sad. When I am in a good mood I love listening to upbeat songs by The Cure and The Smiths. When I am sad and need comfort I listen to Frank Ocean. He is my go-to for every emotion and always will be I could never get sick of him. I am very versitile and I love all kinds of music. I listen to all different genres from every decade. Whenever my friends play different songs I always know them. I am the one in the friend group who knows any and every song. This is a blessing and a curse, as I am also really indesicive.  I had to delete a bunch of apps and photos for my clips to be able to download. Finally, after so much time trying to get my stuff to download, it finally did. I could finally start editing for real. I started cutting all of my videos and trying to add effects, whether it was lighting effects or cool eye catching transitions. I learned how to do this in between the music video and this project. The two themes of the girls paired really well together. I tried to keep everything with the same color scheme. The skater girl's theme was red so I tried to keep all of her clips with the consistent red theme and Jenna's with the pink theme. This way, it would clearly give off different vibes I was trying to achieve. The music I selected was also aimed to fit with each vibe. For example, I picked American Idiot by Green Day for Jade's character because when I look at Jade, I just feel like that is what she would listen to.  For this task, I knew editing was going to be fun. Since I know more about editing now than I did before, I think my editing has progressed since I have edited more now and it only gets better with practice. For this task I had planned to do more special effect editing, not too crazy, but since it was Freaky Friday I was gonna try and edit cool lightning and things like that. Editing took a lot longer than expected because I had to cut several clips and sometimes I cut them a bit short so we even had to refilm some clips. The music aspect also took a while as well. The music I was trying to use would not download and I was experiencing issues with my phone. I learned to use iMovie on my phone because when I first started this class, I did not own a computer to edit it on. Another thing I realized is I did not want to film at school, I already am nervous at school so there is no way I would have allowed myself to film. There also is not that much time to film at school and I just like to remain unnoticed there so I had a backup plan. The movie starts with me and jenna each waking up for school, to show that we are teenagers. Usually that is how coming of age teenager movies go, I feel like they are always showing one girl who is put together and ready for school and another girl who just wakes up and rolls out of bed and picks the first pair of a shirt and shorts that she spots. I had planned to show me late for school, skateboarding there, skipping class, eating pizza. To show contrast I had Jenna be at school ten minutes early, in her outfit she planned the night before, getting ready slowly because she wakes up early enough, and eating a balanced breakfast.  When filming begun, I was already pressed for time. We had to improvise a lot from the original plan because we had less time now. I realized I made this really good and detailed plan that was going to be hard to film in so little time, so I had to adjust a few things from the original plan. First of all, my final pitch is not anything remotely close to what it was originally, because I realized doing my original plan would have been good, yet very time consuming. I explained this in previous blogs but obviously, it affects my filming as well. This impacted our time management and caused many positive benefits creativity wise. I had to think about what would be realistic to film and at the same time what would show our best effort. I like a challenge, so I did not want it to be easy, because that is boring.   While planning everything, I realized that my original idea was not realistic. I did not time everything correctly so now I was pressed for time. The original idea of having an action movie did not really appeal to me anymore because of the circumstances. Even though it sounded really fun, it would have taken a lot more work, time, and planning. This meant a new genre, luckily we researched many genres and I had a cool idea. I knew I wanted to have a theme like a decade theme, I just did not know how to make it a story. Sometimes I will have a creative block where I sit there unable to think of anything. When it finally opens up, a ton of ideas run through my head and my mind goes racing a million miles an hour. I thought maybe I could do action still, but just with three characters. Primarily, I wanted it to be a really cool action opening if I were to do one, I did not want to have it to haphazard.  When doing the titles for this project, I will make them all blend together nicely and not use too many titles. I will spread the titles out evenly depending on what is happening in each scene. When a certain character is introduced, I will put their real life name on the screen. I will put the producer and main title at the beginning, in order to mock what happens in a real movie. the music artists, and other titles. I wanted to spread the character titles out mimicking a real opening sequence.  Timing makes a huge difference. Incorrect timing could cause the consumer to be confused and distract their mind from what they are watching. As far as font goes, certain titles look tacky. When I watch movies, one of my pet peeves is a tacky font. Fonts like this look unprofessional. I want to get a cool font that looks nice and matches with the theme. Contrast is also a big thing when it comes to wording. You want your titles to pop, so it is often suggested to contrast dark, bold ...

The next opening scene I chose was "Star Wars," which is in the drama genre but it is also Sci-fi. All of the people who helped with the film's production were included in the opening scene. This includes the casting designers, make-up artists, and so on. The titles were printed in a very subtle manner on the opening scene. This was advantageous because I noticed them, but they did not divert my attention away from the background. The opening scene featured a variety of images. These images are not static, but rather move slightly. These images depict all of the planets. This makes me want to watch the entire film. The images were all in space, with yellow writing explaining them in the background. This piece of writing depicted the past. It's almost as if it's setting up the film by explaining the heinous events of the past. As the images flip from one to one, this is done extremely well. It contributes to the sci-fi atmosphere by including objects that are not c...

  During the opening scene of Rango titles displayed include, written by, directed by, produced by, produces, designers, ect. . Different animals that will play characters later in the drama are prioritized in the images. This opening sequence is one of a kind. It features minimalistic imagery and pictures. The work has rich colors and contrasts, and it appears to have been painted or sketched. Music and western vibes are two themes that appear in the video. It's almost as if we're in the 19th and 20th centuries. There is a darkness and eariness that is revealed underneath some titles, creating feelings of drama. "Amazingly, Rango's end credit sequence and opening titles were completed in just a few weeks," according to the website, "yet the project allowed for a lot of unique and innovative concepts."  For my first title research blog I am doing Little Women. Little Women is under the categories of drama and romance movie. The opening scenes and titles create a serene yet suspenseful type of mood. It gives off a royal and fairy type of vibe with the fonts and background. The background display is renaissance art and the font of the titles is exactly what I would imagine writing looked like with those fancy feathered pens that princesses wrote letters with back then. The color contrast between the black background color, light blue renaissance art, and the big and bold white lettering is pleasing to the eye and contributes to the overall mood as well. The music in the background is nice and delicate. It matches the background imagery very well and creates a gentle aura. I like the sense of relaxation and royalty.   While browsing the " Art of The Title" website, I discovered that editors and directors employ a variety of strategies. I discovered that not all credits need to be lengthy and tedious. Over funny and entertaining videos, credits and titles can be overlapping. A film can be made more entertaining by combining visual effects and titles. Filmmakers began to generate better advertisements as the advertising culture grew. One example is the use of titles. When it comes to the top ten title sequences, those with color, layers, and emotion receive the most positive feedback. Furthermore, titles do not have to contain only one scene. Many of the titles displayed on the website include multiple photos and sequences from the films. This does not condense the cast and credits into a single section.  

 Drama is one of the most popular genres in film. Many filmmakers use the drama genre when presenting emotional, conflicting, or extreme scenes. Drama can end in both happy and sad situations. For my film I would use drama to portray a conflict between the two main characters. For example if actor #1 gossips about actor #2 then this leads to a potential fight later in the film. Additionally, drama can be seen through dialogue. The dramatic progression of a character can be seen best through their tone and actions. I prefer drama movies because they create a suspense. Usually a drama film leaves viewers at the edge of their seat wondering what will happen next. Some factors in the genre drama can be sound and lighting as well. Drama movies and plays often have dramatic and dark lighting to showcase the rising problems.  These films have successfully drawn attention to the issues by taking advantage of the topic/interest of the subject.  I chose Thriller for my genre research. There is various elements used by a thriller movie director. This includes lighting, camera angles, makeup, acting, and so on. Usually, the director of this genre of film makes it suspenseful. This is demonstrated by the use of low-key lighting and the casting of large shadows. Camera movement, like lighting, is important for conveying the setting. Tracking, panning, and zooming are examples of camera movements in a thriller. These techniques are used to ensure that the audience knows as little as the actor in the film. This adds to the suspense of a thriller film. Terrorists can be subtle or frightening. A character may dress in "normal clothing" to deceive the audience into thinking they are the good cop and not the bad. They could, on the other hand, be dressed in ripped dark clothing with blood to create uncertainty or a horror effect. Makeup is also part of the actor's "costume."  Comedy movies often contain sudden close ups and snappy edits, but there is more to it than you may think. The camera is often used to build on the comedic jokes made in movies like this to amplify the humor. The camera movements and angles make a huge difference. According to an article by Ryan Mcafee called Ten comedic camera techniques every filmmaker should know,   A push angle signifies a lot of things. It can bring the audience in to a more intimate environment; it can literally get viewers closer to the action; and it highlights the importance of what we’re seeing. But when the push just keeps on going, it breaks all that and lets viewers know that, yes, we’re watching a comedy movie. Since it’s not a zoom, but an actual movement (a key distinction), the camera physically gets in the way of everything. Mel Brooks uses these a lot.

 I have been thinking a lot about what I could do for my final pitch. I have kind of had a creative block, but I am still trying to think. When I have blocks, everything all comes to me at once and I have to write everything that comes to min, all scattered, and eventually piece everything together. My favorite movies are action movies and comedy movies. But my all time favorite genre is mystery and crime solving. An action movie might be hard to film in this amount of time and just in general, so I am leaning toward the mystery genre. When I was thinking, I thought of my favorite movies and their opening scenes. My favorite movies are Top Gun, Ferris Bueller, Grease, Napolean Dynamite, Nancy Drew , and any Marvel movie. I figured it might be intriguing to do a mystery movie because something that happens often in mystery movies during the beginning scene can leave you at a cliffhanger or on the edge of your seat.
